How Local Services Ads are ranked, in Google's own words
There is a lot of folklore about LSA ranking. Here is what Google's help center actually says, and what it means day to day.

What Local Services Ads are
Local Services Ads are the listings with a Google badge that appear at the top of many local searches. Google's overview describes an ad built from your business profile, with services, service area, hours, reviews, and a Google Verified badge, and a phone number that forwards to your business. You pay when a customer contacts you through the ad, not when someone views it.
The ranking is an auction, with quality built in
Google's help article on ad rankings says listings are ordered through an auction that takes into account your bid and the overall quality of your profile. It describes higher quality profiles as able to rank higher and potentially pay less per lead, and lists things such as your rating, number of reviews, and response time as part of that quality. Profile images are mentioned as well.
The practical takeaway is that money alone is not the lever many owners assume. A competitive budget gets you into the auction. Reviews, a complete profile, and fast responses decide how well that budget works.
Answering the phone is a ranking factor
Google lists responsiveness to customer inquiries among the factors in how likely an ad is to produce a lead, and notes that missed calls may hurt responsiveness. For a busy owner on a job site, this is the most expensive gap: every unanswered call is both a lost job and a slightly weaker position for the next search.
This is where an AI receptionist or a dependable answering setup pays for itself. It is not about replacing people. It is about never letting the ad's phone number ring out.
What about distance?
Older versions of Google's help text listed proximity as a factor. In 2024, industry coverage reported that this line was removed, and Google's Ads Liaison said ranking had evolved and that a business location is often not a key indicator of relevancy. The current help article does not list proximity. Your service area settings still decide where you can appear at all.
How we manage it
Keep the profile complete, with real photos and every eligible job type. Build a steady review flow. Make sure every call and message is answered fast. Review leads weekly and dispute the ones that should not count where Google allows it. Then adjust budget toward the job types that actually book.
